The BBC’s spaghetti tree hoax was a legendary April Fool’s prank-
On 1 April 1957 the BBC news show “Panorama” broadcast a three-minute report on a plentiful spaghetti harvest in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino. The video showed a Swiss family harvesting spaghetti from the family “spaghetti tree”, placing it in baskets and then laying it in the sun to dry. The crop was a big success because of an unusually mild winter and the “virtual disappearance of the spaghetti weevil”.
Commentary was provided by respected newscaster Richard Dimbleby, an English journalist and broadcaster, who had been the BBC’s first war correspondent.

At the time spaghetti was little known in the UK, and mainly from tinned spaghetti in tomato sauce, which was considered to be an exotic delicacy. Therefore many British people were unaware that it is made from wheat flour and water.
